Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc. is proud to present the second edition of its Exploring Creation With Biology course. The first edition has been used by thousands of students in all 50 states and 13 other countries. Now, this award-winning biology course will get even better!
The second edition of our biology course will have several features that enhance the value of the course:
- There will be more color in this edition as compared to the previous edition, and many of the drawings that are in the first edition have been replaced by pictures or higher-quality drawings. This is especially true for the sections in which microscopic structures are discussed.
- Dr. Wile has been answering student questions on the course for six years. Those questions have allowed him to realize what sections of the book could be written more clearly. Thus, this edition of the biology course is even more understandable than the first edition!
- More topics have been added, such as a discussion of the proposed changes to the standard system of taxonomy. In addition, more details have been added on many topics.
- Some of the experiments have been changed to make them even more interesting and easy to perform.
- There is a course website that has links to materials which provide extra help as well as interesting news related to biology.
- Advanced students who have the time and the ability for additional learning will be directed to online resources that will give them access to advanced subject matter.
- The student text has graphic icons that tell the student when there is a related multimedia presentation on the optional multimedia CD.
- To aid the student in reviewing the course as a whole, there is an appendix that contains questions which cover the entire course. The solutions and tests manual has the answers to those questions.
- There are cumulative tests in the solutions and tests guide if the parent/teacher wants to give the student quarterly, semester, or final exams.
- Finally, even though the module tests are found in the solutions and tests manual (so that the parent/teacher always has a copy of them), a second set of tests is also provided in a perforated booklet. This will allow the student to be given the tests without referring to the solutions and tests manual.
Please note that because of the differences between the first and second editions, students in a group setting cannot use both. They must all have the same edition. Because of this, the first edition of the course will still be available for those in schools or support groups that use the first edition.
This course is designed to be the student’s first high school science course. Typically, we recommend that the student take this course during the same year that he or she is taking Algebra 1. Exploring Creation With Biology is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Please note that this course does not contain a discussion of human anatomy and physiology. Most college biology professors do not consider it to be a part of a solid, college-prep biology course. Human anatomy and physiology is such a detailed subject that it merits an entire high school course (see our advanced biology course).
Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a
tough university biology course.
Here are some comments we have received from the students and parents who have
used the first edition of the biology course:
-
"My brother is in Pensacola Christian College right now, in
his freshman year. He is taking first year biology and told
us that your Biology course prepared him excellently for
this course that he is now taking. He said that all he learned
two years ago through your Biology has helped him to
understand and 'take the next step' up to this level of
biology." -- student
-
" Last year, I completed your Exploring Creation With Biology book and I
completely enjoyed it! I am a senior in high school this year and am
taking Biology I at my local college. I have found that your book
prepared me very well for the things that we have covered so far in class
and lab. " --student
-
"This past academic year my 14 year old daughter studied Biology using
your book. At the end of the year (in June) I decided to sign her up for
the Biology CLEP test just for fun. She took the test and obtained a raw
score of 49...The University of Rhode Island Catalog states that with a
minimum raw score of 49 and a minimum 47th percentile, a student can earn
credit for BIO 104A and 104B (two semesters of college biology for non-bio
majors)." --parent
-
"Last spring my older sister (15, 9th grade) and I (13, 8th grade) took
the General Biology CLEP [after using your biology course in homeschool]. We went to the CLEP web page, where they list
the areas covered in the test, and we bought the official CLEP study
guide. My sister received a 50, and I got a 53. The recommended score for
credits is 46. " -- student
-
"We absolutely LOVE your Biology curriculum! As a nurse who minored in Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, this is delightful material to review - and your very evident love for our Lord makes it really powerful." --parent
-
"I have been very impressed with Exploring Creation With Biology. What an
amazing course! The layout is immensely well organized, with wonderful
diagrams and photographs, which makes it easy to find joy in learning. The
text is so easy to read and understand; I feel like I'm taking a one-on-one
class! I appreciate the simple to do but educational labs. The fact that the
book is written especially for homeschoolers is also greatly valued. Thank you
so much for the descriptive and explanatory course. I have never enjoyed
science before; this book has taught me to have fun with science." -- student
-
"My son and I are enjoying Exploring Creation With Biology. It has become his
absolute favorite subject! My husband is amazed at the thorough content of
this book!" -- parent
-
"Hi! I just wanted to send you a short note to let you know how much I love your science Biology book. It is so easy to understand, and the experiments are wonderful. I love being able to know before I perform the experiment that it is sure to work... All of your experiments work and the results are always amazing! Just today I performed Experiment 7.1 in the Biology book where you extract DNA out of an onion! It was so cool and it worked perfectly! Thanks for doing such a good job!" --student
-
"This year biology has become one of our daughter's favorite subjects thanks
to your book. God bless you for your faithfulness." -- parent
-
"My son has thoroughly enjoyed the book; in fact he has asked to continue it
over the summer! My favorite part about it is that I don't have to become a
biology expert in order for him to learn it because you have written the book
to the student!" -- parent
-
"Thank you for making Biology fun and easy to understand! A nice break for a
worn out mom!" -- parent
-
"In reviewing Exploring Creation With Biology, I am excited to begin teaching
it this fall. I am 'science challenged' myself, but as I read through your
book I found myself saying 'I can do this!' Thank you for blessing our home
school family with excellent and understandable materials." -- parent
-
"We have so enjoyed Exploring Creation With Biology. The section on Darwin
was well done. My son especially enjoyed your chapters on genetics and
evolution." -- parent

Exploring Creation With Biology contains three types of laboratory exercises
for the student to perform:
-
Household labs - Only household equipment is used. These labs should be done
by all students.
-
Microscope labs - Require a microscope + slide set. These labs are optional.
-
Dissection labs - Require a dissection kit. These labs are optional
We do not REQUIRE you to perform the microscope and dissection labs. They
will be beneficial to the student (especially if he or she is science-oriented)
but they are not absolutely necessary. Thus, you should not feel pressured
into purchasing the microscope or dissection equipment. Do so only if you can
afford it! If you have the financial means, we do make available the
microscopy and dissection laboratory equipment. We have worked very hard with
our equipment supplier, Nature's Workshop Plus!, to provide you with a quality
set at a very low price. If you wish to order
directly from them, their toll-free phone number is 888-393-5663.
A list of all of the lab supplies (household, microscope, and dissection) can be found here, listed by module.
PLEASE NOTE: The Biology course also comes on CD-ROM, and we are offering an
INTERNET course for Biology!
